New Lifestyle?

This past weekend, was another very chill relaxing one. One of my friends parents were extremely generous with their hospitality and nice ass meals :) so that was real nice. Another weekend, seeing few celebs.. honestly.. seeing celebs in Korea is just w.e now.. maybe it’s the place and people I hang out with.. its still nice to see them in person then on TV though :)

Today after teaching, I went to the hospital again because my blood sample came in. The nurses and the doctor were waiting for me.. as if something was bad with my results.. I got really scared in the beginning cuz they made me skip everyone and go see the doctor right away.. The doctor was like “we were about to call you because you wouldn’t visit all day..” I was thinking.. wth.. why? what is it? but I just gave out one of those laughs “har har” to tell him okay, im here now so tell me…

Basically.. after my x-ray and blood sample, yes I do have gout. UGH. The uric acid in my blood system is 7.1 (I think thats because I ate medicine earlier that day because it was hurting so much..) The doctor said anywhere from 1 to 7 it’s okay. Even though mine is 7.1, I have to be very careful and pretty much change my lifestyle… To tell you the truth.. without the medicine, it was probably around 7.6 (just guessing..) I can’t drink… the doctor goes “a glass of wine here and there would be okay, but not too much…” wine?… what happen to patron? or soju? or johnny, or grey goose? sigh… and he said no fish or meat.. which includes chicken too… WTH am I supposed to EAT?!!? He told me not to work out either or do anything that would make me sweat a lot..

I’m thinking.. this STUPID disease.. when the HELL  did it come to my body and why is it making me suffer?!? I’m in KOREA!! but yeah.. I left the hospital very sad..

But that’s that.. I weighed myself for the first time after my physical and I lost 5kg which is 11 pounds! I haven’t really worked out yet, so that was nice to see~

Today was my first day in the gym. Why now.. cuz.. I had orientation, then I had to settle in my new city, and now I finally have time.. so yeah… Today was also the day I met my personal trainer! yes yes. I have a personal trainer, so I hope to see good results! I think I walked/ran 5 miles and worked out my legs, butt, and stomach area.. Today was an “easy” day since it was the first day… I look forward to tomorrows workout though! Even though I shouldn’t be working out and sweating.. I mean… I need to do something! I pray my foot gets better… so let this working out = to drinking and eating meat…

I’m finally getting things done while I’m out here in Korea.. hopefully I’ll be able to do the things I wanted to before I came out here…I hope to go back home as a healthy kid :)

I woke up today and my foot started hurting a lot… I don’t know why. I haven’t drank since the last time it acted up at the second orientation of this program.. Long story short.. I went to the hospital.. Meeting the doctor, blood sample, and x-ray, the total came out to 20,000 won which is like 17 dollars… that’s the price WITHOUT my insurance..

With the price I paid… I was actually pretty shocked.. thought I had to pay at least $50… My insurance is a travel’s insurance, so I have to pay first and then get reimbursed all of it expect 10,000 won. So if I paid.. $200, I get $190 back from the insurance company. So in the end, no matter what, I pay 10,000 won which is like $8. Very nice insurance~~

This made me realize.. what the HELL is wrong with American’s Health care?!? Def. something that America needs to work on. No wonder all the Koreans come to Korea to get a medical and dental check up….

Very happy to visit the hospital without having to worry about the price.. better get everything checked up and come back as a healthy person :)

Relax and Chill in Apgujeong

Seoul = too much fun?

Seriously, Seoul is to be. This past weekend, was just real chill and lots of fun. I got to meet a lot of new people. Even though these peeps all live in Korea, they all studied abroad in the states, europe, and australia so we all just connect. Hanging out with good peeps I shall say. Every weekend, we always seem to run into celebrities. This weekend, I bumped into 솔비 (Solbi). Her sister was our waitress at this bar in 압구 (Apgujeong). 압구 became our hangout spot since all of our friends and relatives live there. It’s also where all the celebs live/chill. So its nice to see all the models and celebs. But anyways, I was able to shake hands with Solbi and tell her that I’m a fan of hers. She thanked me and told me to visit the bar often, since her sister works there…Isnt that kinda weird? You a celeb, and your older sister works as a waitress at a korean bar?  maybe she owns part of it? I dunno..Solbi used to be real pretty before the recent plastic surgery… man.. I don’t know if its her company that made her do  that, but I felt really bad for her when I saw her. Her sister, when she came out on 우결 (We got Married) was real pretty too but she did some plastic surgery and looks really different… they both seem to have put something in their cheeks.. I dunno… still a fan of Solbi though. Hope the best for her and her sister~~

Saturday, Will and I went to a skin clinic in apgujeong and we got our moles removed. But it’s def. a long process.. no pictures for a long time.. haha I plan to do some other stuff to my face while I’m there… it’s really expensive though… but they gave us a mad deal since our friend and my aunt and aunt grandma goes there.. The doctor kinda wanted me to teach her 6 year old daughter english.. hahaha who knows? She was like uh oh, I better take extra care for 선생님 (teacher). hahaha ate some good food after and we all hit the jazz bar at night called blue moon. This place is mad chill. Lots of famous people have performed here and visited. It’s been in several movies and dramas. It’s a real chill place to grab some wine or cocktails and just listen to a live jazz band. We ended up staying there till it closed because one of our friends knew the saxophonist. We got to meet the whole band after. It was real cool.

Sunday, Happy Easter! Didn’t seem like a big deal in Korea at all… Just chilled at a cafe in Apgu again. The guy sitting next to us worked for MTV in Korea and I was like oh snap…but I just chilled…haha..The weather was real nice and got to meet more new people through friends. After good laughs and what not, I ended up going to Will’s city, Chuncheon. Had a pretty chill night with other friends in that city and headed back to my city this morning and went straight to work..

I’ve been meeting really cool chill GOOD people. All these peeps come from a real good background, and it’s easy to relate with these peeps since they all studied abroad. Esp hanging out in Apgu, everyone seems to know English. It’s def a good place to live. I’ve never seen so many Bentley, Ferrari, Lambo, Aston Martin  in my life.. Mercedes, BMW, and Audi’s seems to be just normal cars sometimes in this city…

I miss everyone back at home. I def. talk a lot about my good friends here, to the point where everyone seems to know them even though they never met.. hahaha Even though I kind of didn’t want to come to Korea, I def. do not regret it. I can’t say I’m not having a good time. Through this program, I met lot of good people so far, and def making long lasting memories. I feel like I’m growing and maturing a lot more. Being here in Korea, and being able to start fresh makes me realize things I didn’t back at home. I def. have been learning the value of family and how strong and important it is… I’m def understanding more about this culture and experiencing few things my parents went through when they were little..its def good..very thankful to be here..

wherever your life takes you, make the most out of it. Enjoy it while it lasts.. live your life to the fullest..as if each day is your last…

Sinpyoung Elementary School
April 1, 2010, 10:20 AM

So I’m placed in Wonju, South Korea.. placed in Sinpyoung Elementary School which is a 40 minute bus ride from the city..

This is the main entrance to the school. My school is pretty small since its outside of the city..There is a elementary school behind my apartment and its three times bigger then the one I teach at.. But honestly working at a smaller school is a lot better for me. Less students and teachers are able to have a closer relationship..

Teaching is a lot of fun.. Honestly, even though there is a curriculum we should follow, I still had to come up with a 6 month lesson plan and turn it in. I’m pretty much making these lesson plans out of my own head.. Becoming a teacher all of a sudden has its challenges but for the hours I work, I get paid a lot…so its all good~

The classes are in groups. 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th, and 5th and 6th. I see each group 5 times a week…

My favorite class: 1st and 2nd

I love this class. They are so cute. I played “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz the first day I met them.. and now they ONLY want to listen to the song. It’s pretty funny because the other teachers changed their ringtones and caller to “I’m Yours” hahahaha so I introduced a good song to my school.

3rd and 4th:

These are the 3rd and 4th.. They pretty smart. They’re really cute too. They always want to show me what they did earlier in the day, like little crafts or w.e.  These kids love giving me things, but I always lose it somewhere… hahaha I’m pretty strict to this group though.. I’m not gonna lie. Give them lots of tests…

5th and 6th:

These kids… ugh.. the complain non stop..but I do a stamp system where if they are good and they help others, they get one stamp. I’m really strict with these guys too… they are actually pretty smart. I would like to say cute.. but they in the “I know everything” stage.. so.. it’s just w.e..

I feel like I learn a lot through teaching. It gets tiring sometimes and its esp a bigger challenge because I can’t speak any Korean. So for these kids to understand what I’m saying when the co-teacher is not there.. its hard. The kids really make my day though..esp the young ones. The 1st and 2nd always want to hug me and they get jealous if I give one student more attention… hahaha mad cute

The youngest teacher, the 1st grade teacher, got 5 of her friends together who are also elementary teachers, and every Thursday they buy me dinner and coffee in exchange for an English conversation..not bad huh? Knowing English in this country.. is gold. hahaha but its been real chill. I just keep on talking and talking and ask them questions, and they have to respond in English. They learn new vocab so its cool. Everytime I talk to them though.. it makes me want to go back to the states a lot.. I’m like man.. America is so nice. I want to go back. I told them one day and they were like… noo~~ KOREA IS NICE!!! so much pride.. hahaha but yeah Korea is nice…

If I can fix one thing.. I wish this program gave us cars.. Having to be dependent on buses and taxis and other teachers is so annoying.. I wish I can just drive and do what I have to do when I need to do it. The freedom of a car… I feel like a freshmen in high school… I don’t really notice it in Seoul cuz I like the subways a lot but damnn.. the money i spend on taxi…I can buy so many other things.. I hate the public bus too. Always crowded, and it’s always like a roller coaster.. sigh… car….

But anyways… our crew is planning to go to Thailand in May.. I’m mad excited for that. THAILAND BABY~~ this weekend, I plan to take out my moles with a friend too~~ HOLLA. Getting things done while I’m in Korea!

Hope everyone’s doing well.. come visit me!!

5 things I miss back at home…and more

  1. My Friends!
  2. Driving
  3. Food
  4. My bed
  5. JCA

I don’t miss Atlanta at all. Honestly.. how could I when I’m in Korea?!?! So much more things to do late in the night. I miss all my friends a lot though..(yes you)… I miss just chillin with friends at my apartment, yoforia, intermezzo, wings.. But at the same time, so thankful to have my close friends with me wherever I go :)

Oh man.. I miss driving sooo much. I feel like stealing a car right now and just driving around and then return it back..maybe.. My friends here, we want to drive so badly.. we were really thinking about renting out a car. What’s also cool is that we can use our ID’s from back at home to drive here in Korea… Or if we go to the DMV, we give them our ID from home, and they give us a Korean ID right away…I want to just drive listening to chill music!! sigh.. subway, bus, taxi.. is always nice too…. one day… i shall steal a car for like 8 hours..

I miss certain food back at home… first off.. did you know in Korea, it’s only $3 for a McDonalds Value Meal from 11 to 2pm?!? Isn’t that mad cheap? $3?!? why cant it be like that back in the states?! Well.. I miss pho.. I had pho here in Korea.. it was nice and all.. but I mean.. I want some DIRTY pho. hahaha I want chipotle..yum.. Want some In-n-Out…sigh.. I want some warm cookies…some fish tacos… fat fries… But I do have to say… the 붕어빵 is ALWAYS good here :) I found 3 carts that sell them on the way to my bus stop every morning.. The toast here in Korea is ridiculously good… I don’t know why its so good.. I should open a toast shop back at home.

I miss my bed.. my queen size, foam mattress bed… amen.

I miss JCA.. weird.. I know.. but the churchs here aint the same.. I miss the worship JCA has.. I think I realized how much I miss JCA when Daniel and I knew we were not going to make it to church, so we ended up listening to P. Matt’s sermon online. Listening to the sermon, made me think of home and JCA a lot.. the churchs here are great.. but i just feel like something is missing.. I still have to try out 2 other churchs… and see which one I like.. (yes I go to church here.. and if I skip.. I listen to P.Matts sermon.. so shut up)

Korea has seriously been so much fun. I’m supposed to be saving up money and coming back home.. but at this rate.. I might come home broke.. hahaha (I better not) My brother Daniel Johung had to resign from the program and go back to LA :( Last weekend, some of us met up in Seoul and hung out in Paul’s apartment.. let me just say… Paul’s apartment is MAD nice.. It’s over $1 million something… his dad is mad ballin~ It was fun being able to just all hang out in that apartment, drink, and just chill… I felt like I was back at home.. just chillin with friends, eating lots of food, and just dancing and laughing all night..Hanging out with Daniel all weekend was seriously a lot of fun.. It was fun being up all night when everyone else is sleeping just laughing  non stop.. hahaha Going to 63 bulding and Lotte World at night was mad fun too.

This past weekend was Emmeline and Karen’s birthday~ Friday night, few friends I havent seen since Jo Chi Won came up to Seoul and we chilled again at Paul’s place… Saturday, some of us ended up going to a cafe we always go to in 압구정 (Apgujeong). As we were walking in, we saw KARA (girl group) coming out of the cafe. There are always celebs in 압구정.. but it was my first time seeing KARA in person.. They a lot prettier in real life then on TV.. I watched Alice of the Wonderland in 3D. I don’t know how it is in the states, but most Korean movies are in 3D. Isn’t that cool? It was my first time watching a 3D movie…I want to watch Avatar in 4D!! I heard it’s really cool. Ate dinner, and went to a 포차 (PoCha) and then at like midnight we ended up going clubbing. We went to NB in 강남 (Gangnam) again. What’s really cool about that is that with one price, we can visit two clubs: NB and Harlem. They right next to each other too. NB is ALWAYS packed.. can barely move.. but Harlem had better music when we visited.. We ended up dancing at NB – Harlem – NB. When we went back to NB, we were dancing right in front of the DJ booth cuz there was more room.. As we were dancing, one of our friends noticed the DJ was YG. I didn’t believe her at first, but it really was! YG (the CEO of Big Bang, 2ne1, 1tym) was our DJ!! It was soo cool. I took a picture of him with my cell phone, and then got in trouble from his people and had to delete it.. but it was still cool seeing him up close. Shoot.. should have danced better or something.. maybe I could have got signed! LOL jk jk but it def. made my night..

I was talking to someone about Korea… honestly… if everyone I was close with back at home was in Korea.. I would never leave here.. We talked about how we both wanted to live in Korea for at least 3 years..oh man.. sometimes I wish I came here after I graduated college..but don’t worry.. can’t wait to go home and chill with all you peeps too :)

Some Pics from Daniel’s goodbye weekend:

Daniel and I were chillin in Myoung Dong for a while.. it’s always hard for us two to pick where to eat..

It’s been a long time since I updated..

We ended up leaving Jo Chi Won and had another orientation in Sokcho for those students who were placed in Ganwondo province.  It’s a city located on the east coast of Korea. The city is soo beautiful. It has the beach to its east and famous mountains (sul-ak-san) to the west. Because it snowed before, it was a lot nicer. The orientation overall was mad chill. I wasn’t able to attend any of the lectures because my gout started acting up and I had to go to the hospital…. which was good cuz the lectures are mad boring anyways. We were able to go out and explore the city and eat real good food. Had lots of fun at the orientation with friends and our co-teachers we all met :)

The day we had to leave the orientation was when Kim Yu Na performed for the Winter Olympics. Man.. when that score of 78 came out.. we were all screaming and jumping because we were so happy. We all had to split and go to the cities we were all placed :( Out of the 300 TaLK Scholars, 25 were placed in Gangwondo province and from there,  7 people who were placed in Wonju.

When I arrived to Wonju, had to visit the school and say hello to my principal and vice principal and other teachers.. then we went to go search for apartments. They wanted me to live in a studio like all the other students, but I decided to live in the same place the previous TaLK Scholar lived in. It’s a 2 bedroom apartment and the size is a lot bigger then most apartments. I decided to live with a friend named Caleb who is another teacher for another school. By living together, we both save $200 each. The government gives us $400 each to spend on an apartment for every month. This apartment I live in costs exactly $400. So with the remaining $200, I plan to use it on utilities, grocery, and pay off our cell phone bill which is REAL nice. Saving money~

This weekend was soo much fun. I went up to Seoul, and had to go straight to my Aunt Grandma’s house who lives in 압구정 (Apgujeong) to celebrate her birthday. Since I have some other friends who have family members who live in the same city, I ended up meeting them in Rodeo in Apgu. Some of our friends were all able to meet up after we split from JoChiwon. It was really good seeing them. We went to this nice cafe, ate mad good food, went to a hooka bar, and then went to 동대문 (dong-dae-moon) for early morning shopping. The early morning shopping starts at midnight and ends at 5am. We just looked around and ended up at a jimjilbang and slept there. Next morning we woke up, met up with more friends and shopped around dong-dae-moon. Everyone bought some good clothes, and it was REAL fun marketing down the prices. It’s always playing a game with them.. Lying always helps too. Such as (Man.. I saw this jacket at so and so and it costs this much! why is it so expensive here?) stuff like that.. I dunno.. its fun :)

Then we went to 이대 (Eee-dae) It’s a place in front of the all women’s college. The clothes and food is a lot cheaper then other places. I was able to buy 2 pairs of shoes and a bag that I can use to put my clothes in everytime I come up to Seoul since I didnt want to use my backpack.. you can say it’s a man purse.. AKA murse.. Everyone in Korea has one.. so I fit right in :)

Then we went back to Apgujeong and went to this Italian place called Mad For Garlic. Ate some nice pasta and drank some wine. Wine in Korea is REALLY expensive.. I don’t know why.. but anyways, it was a real nice restaurant and we did spend lots of money :( but w.e it was worth it. After dinner, I introduced everyone to this famous 포차 (PoCha) in Apgujeong that I went to 3 years ago. It was called JUJU. Drank and ate there again…and then we went clubbing!

Clubbing was a lot of fun. We went to this place called NB in 강남 (Gangnam). There were a lot of American-Koreans and few foreign people which was interesting.. I felt like I was at a club back in the states except just a lot more Koreans. It was a real good night :)

The next day, I was able to visit Pastor Joshua, who was the pastor for Saehan, the church I went to before I started going out to JCA. He came to Korea my first year in college for EM. It was really good seeing him. He looks exactly the same :) I was able to bring Sam and Daniel with me. The church was really big. Sermon was good as always and it was just cool seeing him preach in Korea. After church and some hanging out, I went down to Chuncheon with Will.

Will was placed in Chuncheon, and the city is only 40 minutes away from Wonju. Chuncheon was so nice! We got to meet up with other friends who werent able to come up to Seoul. As always, had an awesome time. Chuncheon is famous for their ddak-gal-bi and mak-gook-soo. We went to this place called CoCos. It was like ddak-gal-bi inside a sweet pumpkin. And we had another one with sweet potato all around and in the middle it was ddak-gal-bi filled with cheese. It was heaven. SOOO good. Next day, ordered jajamyun with everyone for the first time, and had a feast. So much food.. and then shopped a little, and then this hyoung took some of us up to this mountain. When I woke up that day, it was snowing a lot so when we went up the mountain, it was so beautiful. The mountains were all white and it was just an amazing view. Then the hyoung took us to this place for ddak-gal-bi. It was also really good.

Today was the first day of teaching!! whoo hoo! Just prepared a powerpoint, and did a intro of myself. My school is called 신평초 (Sinpyoung Elementary School). I teach grades 1 to 6. Today I taught grades 3/4 and 5/6. It was so funny because I’m not allowed to speak any Korean when I am teaching. But clearly.. I can understand everything the students are saying but I have to act like I cant.. If I speak Korean.. then the kids will never speak English and they will never learn… the kids were like.. “So weird.. he looks Korean.. he really looks Korean.. but he’s American… weird… ” LOL And they think I’m mad rich because I showed them pictures of San Diego and Atlanta with all the buildings and sail boats.. that I found from google..LOL funny kids.. :) I love my school! I love the teachers, they mad mad nice, and the kids are so cute. After school, the teachers had hwea-sheek. Which is where all the teachers go eat free food and get drunk. It was real fun. I had to eat other things then the teachers cuz my stupid gout.. but I still had a real good time.

Korea overall has been amazing! I’ve been having so much fun. It seems like this is just a summer break for me now.. I was able to meet a lot cool people and make a lot of close friends. Loving my crew~ for real. I’ve been doing well and just living it up :)  How’s everyone else doing? How are things back at home?

Last Night in Jo Chi Won

I wanted to take some time out from crazy partying and endless drinking and update you guys. Honestly I can’t believe it’s only been 3 weeks.. I feel like I left home a month ago. 300 students from America, Australia, Canada, Europe, and New Zealand came together to this jo chi won campus to become english teachers. It’s kinda crazy if you think about it.. One day you’re just a normal college student,  and the next you preparing yourself to become an english teacher..you know?

I met a lot of chill people here though. People who are just solid. I love the new friends I made here. Everyone is really old too… They all 85, 86 or 87, but most of the girls are 89, which is good. Most people I hang out with are in my province so it’s really good cuz we will be a lot closer to each other. We such a diverse group too. We got lots of LA peeps, Dallas, New York, San Fran, Seattle, New Zealand, Australia, Toronto, and of course ATL. The New Zealand and Australians have a thick accent which is so cool. They think Americans have an accent though.. hahaha they spell color: colour… weird huh? I kinda wish I had an accent myself.. but then again.. in a way.. I have my own language..

I honestly love Korea.. here in jo chi won, my friend Grace Seon (from Texas) and I are obsessed with 붕어빵 (boong-uh-bbang). This old couple are on the streets selling these and grace and I go and just buy a lot. 3 for $1.00 yo. They like us a lot so they always give us a free one :) We told them that tonight was our last night and how we have to leave to teach english… They were sad that they weren’t able to see us anymore.. In a short time, they became like our grandparents.. We promised them that we would visit them soon though. As long as you have a good attitude about things, people become like family here.. I think its more like that in jo chi won because its less of a city then Seoul though..

Almost everynight, everyone is drunk.. In the beginning, I did drink a lot too forgetting that I had gout.. It honestly sucks to have gout and not being able to drink in a country like Korea.. It’s a HUGE challenge.. People dont believe that I have it though.. So they keep on making me drink…sigh.. no but for real.. It started hurting a lot this morning.. so I guess there’s a warning. It’s so stupid. When I tell people I have gout, they think I’m making it up… they all “WTF is GOUT?” LOL ughhh FML.. Dealing with drunk people and the drama it brings too… is always fun.. lol

I’ve been really tired too though. I’m always passing out in lectures and everyones taking pictures of me just sleeping when the teacher is right in front of me.. and I always manage to sit in the middle if not the front.. lol

We have lectures some days so the program can teach us how to become teachers, and what to expect in classrooms, and how to deal with things in certain situations.. etc. I don’t know if it sounds fun to you.. but.. its MAD boring.

Weekends, all the students manage to go up to Seoul. This past weekend was a four day weekend for us. It was New Years and also V-Day on the same day! I was able to get a lot closer with my friends and meet a lot of new ones too. It was a weekend full of just drinking, partying, eating, and sleeping at jim jil bang together. It was probably one of my favorite weekends so far.

I was also able to go to Onnuri Church with Daniel and Sohoon. The cars at this church are.. amazing. As Daniel and I walked to the church from the subway station, all we saw were Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Bentley, Range Rovers.. I mean I know celebrities go to the church too but dang yo.. I was shocked. But anyways, the sermon was alright. I didn’t like the guest speaker as much… made me appreciate JCA  a lot more.. lol QTs have been real hard. ugh..

Anyways, tonights the night in Jo Chi Won in Korea University. Tomorrow, we all go to our own provinces, where mine is Gangwondo. Off to a resort in Sokcho for a Gangwon orientation.. Then I’m off to Wonju in March to become an english teacher.

English Camp: Global Village

Group 4 A3!!!

This week we went to a english camp called global village. We were all assigned one elementary student from all over Korea and we basically had to teach them english. I got this 13 year old, and I named him Justin. He had a real hard time remembering his name though. lol He’s one of those kids who’s “too cool for school” but still a really good kid.

It was really weird being assigned with a kid.. to be a teacher… Most times, I was just physically tired.. but it was real nice to teach these kids english and just building a relationship. I felt like I learned a lot through the kids myself.

Some pics from Global Village:

the best group :)

A3!!

a view shot of where we were.. never ending snow :)

bye bye :(

It was fun while it lasted. A good practice for when we actually have to teach a whole class by ourselves.

Korea has been so much fun so far. Building relationships with other teachers and just chilling. I’ve been meeting someone new everyday :) I can’t believe its only been a little over a week though. I feel like I’ve been here a lot longer. Our schedule is so tight and everyday we have so much to do.

I really do like Korea though. Never want to leave this place!! but at the same time, I really miss a lot of people back home :(

Hope everyone’s doing well!
